Bobby

“Bobby establishes Mani as a thoughtful, deft musician ready to add his voice to the roster of Scandinavians who continue to sculpt a distinctive jazz sound.”

- Franz A. Matzner, All about Jazz.

-About the album -

This complete artistic interpretation of Mikael Máni is an inspiring mental chess game that brings a fresh air to the jazz scene. A new voice, instrumentalist that loves lyrics and jazz, and combines the intellectuality of a composer and the honesty of a singer-songwriter. He is a young jazz guitarist that found inspiration reading Bobby Fisher‘s biography, and bases his debut album on a fictional interpretation of Bobby‘s life in self-written songs that each captures an element of human nature. The trio comprised of 3 Icelandic musicians all of a different generation. Skúli Sverrisson plays on bass and Magnús Trygvason Elíassen plays on drums and vibraphone.

-Praise about the album-

“It would sit very comfortably on the ECM label, not mainstream jazz, either contemporary or from the golden age… a very good debut from an exciting and interesting jazz guitarist”
-Simply jazz talk

“It is rare to receive an album that is as layered as Bobby. By the first listening you can tell that it’s a magnificently deep, lyrical and tender jazz album that is both rewarding and demanding. Mikael Máni is a young instrumentalist that demonstrates both outstanding guitar playing and joy in his experiments.”
-Ragnheiður Eiríksdóttir, Morgunblaðið

"The encounter with the album "Bobby" is fascinating and makes me look forward to the next release of Mikael Máni's career with impatience."
-Marcin Kozicki, StacjaIslandia

“Finely attuned to each others’ sensibilities this is a trio that displays a maturity beyond its apparently youthful years. Mani is definitely an emerging talent, who will have much more to say. I look forward to hearing more from
him and his trio colleagues in the future.”

-Ian Mann, The Jazz Mann

“Mikael Mani and his trio have crafted a fascinating and beautifully compelling musical homage”
-Chris Baber, Jazzviews

“Whilst the album is primarily jazz, it has an atmospheric, melodic richness that suggests it could also sit comfortably in the record collections of Tortoise, Nick Drake or Lambchop fans. At times, it’s brisk, bright and energetic; at others, it lurches along unexpectedly, interspersed with meditative passages and taut scribbles of guitar from Mikael.”
-John Rogers, Grapevine
